Fiberglass Car Repair

There are many different materials that are used when putting a car together. Although aluminum is the most common there are others used including fiberglass. One disadvantage to using fiberglass is that it can crack although in most cases this does not happen very easily. But when it does it can cost between $50 to $200 to repair it.

The best way to save yourself this money and frustration is to repair the problem yourself. With our help we can show you the most effective way to repair most types of cracks that might occur.

What To Do

  • Use a mild dish soap detergent and warm water to wash the crack down completely. Make sure to rinse out the soap and allow it to dry.
  • Place a cone shaped bit on your rotary that is slightly larger then the crack. You need to use this to widen it so that you are able to expose it all and to make sure that it is clean and dry.
  • Fill the hole with a special fiberglass epoxy using a plastic spreading tool. The resin needs to be kept level with the body of the car. However, you need to make sure that it is full completely. Give the resin at least four hours to dry. This time may vary depending on what brand you use.
  • Sand down the epoxy and make it smooth so that it is level with the body of the car. Use a 240 grit sandpaper for this. Sand it down until the areas are smooth when you touch it.
  • If you do not think that it is smooth enough then you should use a 400 grit sandpaper on the surface of it until the area is completely smooth.
