Spa Fiberglass Repair

Many of us enjoy owning a hot tub because it gives us the opportunity to have fun and relax from a stressful day no matter what time of year it is. These are rather expensive and as such require a good deal of upkeep to make sure that they continue to work as the years go by. The majority of them are made with fiberglass because they are easy to install and maintain.

However, accidents can happen and problems can occur that will cause it to crack or become weakened over time. When this happens all you need are a few good tools to repair the problem and have it looking and working as good as new.

What To Do

  • Use a 60 to 80 grit sandpaper to sand down the area that is cracked. When you do this process you need to start at the edge of the crack and move down two inches beyond the crack.
  • Take the fiberglass cloth from the repair kit you have purchased for it. All three patches need to be smaller then the crack and progressively smaller then each other.
  • Combine the resin and hardener of fiberglass. You need to read the directions carefully to know the proportions that need to be combined.
  • Set the smallest of the patches inside of the mixture that you made and make sure that it is thoroughly wet. Place this over the crack. Do this with the other two patches and allow it to dry overnight.
  • Use a 60 to 80 grit sandpaper to sand down the patches. Please make sure that you do not sand down the surface of the hot tub that is not damaged.
  • Place marine plastic filler of the sanded area and let it dry thirty minutes or longer if necessary. When it is dry you can sand it down so that it will blend in with the rest of the bathtub.
  • Use gel coat with the colorant till you have the right color that will match you’re the hot tub. Apply it to the surface with a small paint roller.
  • Place plastic wrap over the surface to allow it to dry overnight.
  • Use 220 wet/dry sandpaper over the area to help blend it in with the unaffected surface.
